Hello everyone, this is Og Maciel with another book recommendation from Bellwether. If you’ve been reading my weekly book recommendations, you might remember that back in August, I wrote about The Nightmare Factory by Thomas Ligotti. In that review, I mentioned my complicated relationship with the horror genre. I’m both attracted to and scared of horror – there’s a lure that draws me to horror stories, haunted houses, ghost stories, and the like.

Hey everyone, this week, I’m bringing you something completely different from my previous suggestions, and as always, I’ve got to start with a little story. When I was in my early teens, I was obsessed with reading comic books—specifically Conan the Barbarian. I don't even remember who the publisher was, it was that long ago. But every time a new edition hit the shelves, I’d rush to the local magazine shop to grab a copy.

My relationship with horror, whether through books or movies, has always been a complicated one. Even at my current age, I find myself terrified of watching horror movies or reading horror books, yet there’s an undeniable fascination that draws me in. It’s almost like a magnetic attraction, compelling me to overcome my fears and pick up a book or watch the latest horror flick. The last time I experienced such visceral horror was while watching Will Smith search through a dark bathroom filled with zombies in the movie "I Am Legend".

"Dandelion Wine" is a masterful exploration of the beauty and complexity of life through the eyes of a young boy. Bradbury's prose is both lyrical and precise, capturing the fleeting moments of joy, wonder, and melancholy that define childhood. The novel's structure, composed of interconnected vignettes, allows readers to experience the richness of Green Town and its inhabitants in a deeply personal way. The sensory details in "Dandelion Wine" are particularly striking.

"Cockfight" by the Equatorian writer, Maria Fernanda Ampuero, is not for the faint of heart. For an author to write good horror, they have to dare to be transgressive and name those things society is too afraid to look in the eye. Ampuero opens her short story collection with the story of a woman who is kidnapped by a taxi to be auctioned like cattle. In order to escape she defecates in front of a crowd to remind them she is not merchandise, but a human being.
